SAD DEMISE OF SHRI NIRANJAN M. MEHTA
ON Friday, 21st OCTOBER 2005.
A PIONEER IN THE FIELD OF MOTORING
Mr. Niranjan M. Mehta, Past President of the WIAA and FIAA passed away on Friday, 21st October 2005 at the age of 69.
He joined WIAA in 1967 and became its Managing Committee Member in 1970. He was the President of the Western India Automobile Association in 1975. He was the longest serving member on the Committee of WIAA & FIAA.
He was the Chairman of WIAA Institute of Motoring.
He was a very active Council Member of the Federation of Indian Automobile Associations from 1972 and was the President of the Federation in 1973 & 1977. As Council Member of FIAA, Mr. Mehta was instrumental in resolving many complicated carnet cases and reinstatement of the Carnet Service charges for handling carnet cases by FIAA.
In November 1981, Mr. Mehta was invited by AIT at a meeting in Nairobi to sort out problems the AIT was facing in respect of Carnet net-work and was appointed as an Advisor to the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme on delicate situations faced by the AIT in the Gulf. His appointment as an Advisor to AIT brought honour to the Association.
On the whole Mr. Niranjan Mehta was a great support in the Motoring World as he was always a fighter where Customs Carnets & Traffic matters were concerned.
The WIAA organized the 10th General Assembly of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme in Mumbai from 10th to 13th March 1990. He was presented with a Memento in appreiciation of his distinguished and dedicated services as the Convenor for the AIT Region II-10th General Assembly.
He was regulary organizing seminars on Traffic Problems, and in search of Traffic Solutions.
He wrote several books on Road Safety for children, the latest being "Aey Bhai Zara Dekhke Chalo". Mr. Mehta was a Champion of Road Safety and was the pioneer in the establishment of Road Safety Institutes all over. His idea of establishing a Safe Driving University in Mumbai has been accepted by the Government Of Maharashtra. It was his long-cherished dream that WIAA should establish a University for Drivers, where the driver would be taught his responsibilities and liabilities while in possession of a vehicle. He would be well groomed in terms of manners and etiquettes to be observed on and off duty, and other dos and don'ts. This project is under progress.
As Mr. Mehta gave his life for safety, WIAA has dedicated a Training Centre in his name, which was inaugurated, by Shri A.N. Roy, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai on 29th September 2005, in the presence of Mr. Mehta and other dignitaries.
At the 85th Annual General Meeting of WIAA, on 29th September 2005, Mr. Niranjan Mehta was felicitated with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his services in the field of motoring by Chief Guest Mr. A.N. Roy, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.
With his Demise, FIAA and WIAA have lost a Friend, a Well Wisher, a Visionary Guide, & Father of Safety to the Motoring World.
