Since the day I have been hearing and reading about a "Small Car" or "Janata Car" I have been wondering whether India is at present really manufacturing any Big or Luxury Cars; Or are we at present using Big Sedans (Indian make)?
At present what we need is a "Good Car" or "Small Car"-the present ones lacking the desired quality and durability though beinghighly priced.
There is a lot of confusion, at present, as to who is going to get the licence to manufacture, which State would be preferred for setting up the factory, whether Govt. would issue the licence keeping in mind the socialistic pattern, or favour someone etc.
Really speaking these are not our worries because, for a car owner, it is not going to be of much importance. But I think it would be worth discussing what we would expect in a new car, I don't know whatto call a "Real Small Car" ora "New Car" ora "Good Car"? I think all would prefer a real good car.
At present a car is a sheer Luxury. One should be bold to face the facts, The amount of excise we pay on a new car, the wheel tax. the R.T.O. Tax. Insurance premium, petrol and oil prices - thanks to the standard of our cars the conditions of the roads and their maintenance which we have to bear, are sufficientto prove the point.
It is surprising that authorities want to check cars which are 20 years or over old; old cars are really good and the car which runs for so many years is bound to run because it has passed the reliability trial period., But new cars? - who's concerned -theowner alone.
There is a small story which I think you'll like: A husband came home one evening and his loving wife seeing him exhausted asked him the cause of exhaustion, "Darling, I saved the bus-fare today, I came running behind the bus." said the husband. "Oh Darling! how wonderful it would have been, had you come running after a taxi. You could have saved more by way of taxi fare!"
What is important and required in India today is a good car, a sturdy and economical one in the right sense keeping in mind our needs, climatic conditions and the conditions of the roads. It may be the same present car models or new or small or Janata manufactured by anyone but understrict quality control.
We, the present and future car owners, neither want to save bus fare nor taxi fare but would be happy if we get a 'Good Car' that's worth our money. |
