Just over 50km south-west of Bhavnagar, Palitana is little more than gateway to Shatrunjaya, the Place of Victory and is one of Jainism's holiest pilgrimage places. The 600-meter ascent from the base of the hill to the summit is a walk of some two kms, up more than 3000 steps. Over a period of 900 years, 863 temples have been built on the hilltop overlooking the town, and even after large-scale Muslim campaigns of destruction in the 14th and 15th centuries, the crest looks like a giant, glistening marble wedding cake. The most notable of the temples is dedicated to Shri Adishwara, the first tirthankar (Jain prophet or `Finder of the Path'). Adjacent is the Muslim shrine of Angar Pir. Women who want to have children make offerings of miniature cradles at this shrine.
