Manas Sanctuary & Tiger Reserves

In the foothhills of the Himalaya, north-west of Guwahati, Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is on the Bhutan border. On the banks of the River Manas 176km west of Guwahati, Manas, Assam's only Project Tiger sanctuary, is an absolutely spellbinding place, now reopened after being closed to visitors for several years.

As it emerges from the jungle-covered Himalayan foothills, the snow-fed river has a reputation as one of the best fishing grounds for the legendary mahseer, a pike-like game fish renowned as a fighter. Manas also has rhino, wild elephant, the rare hispid hare, golden langur and the pigmy hog.

Manas is best from January to March, although there is excellent fishing from November to December. Boats can be hired for excursions or fishing trips on the Manas River.
